What do citizens and stakeholders think about the future of algae aquaculture in the Black Sea?
As marine algae aquaculture gains increasing attention as a potential contributor to a more sustainable blue economy, understanding how people perceive its development is essential.
The EX-AQUA project has launched a survey to explore the current awareness, expectations and concerns of citizens and stakeholders regarding algae cultivation and algae-derived products.
Why does social acceptance matter?
The development of sustainable algae aquaculture is not only a scientific and technological challenge. Its long-term success also depends on how communities, consumers, businesses, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders perceive the opportunities and potential challenges associated with algae cultivation.
EX-AQUA is therefore seeking to better understand different perspectives across the Black Sea region.
The survey explores views on topics including:
- Awareness and knowledge of algae aquaculture;
- Expectations regarding the development of algae cultivation;
- Potential environmental benefits;
- Potential economic opportunities;
- Possible societal benefits;
- Concerns related to algae cultivation and algae-derived products;
- Conditions that could support the responsible and sustainable development of the sector.
The findings will contribute to a better understanding of the factors that may influence social acceptance of algae aquaculture in the Black Sea region and help inform the project’s work towards a sustainable and competitive marine algae aquaculture sector.

The survey is open to citizens and stakeholders interested in the future of the Black Sea, marine aquaculture, sustainability, the blue economy, food and biotechnology, environmental protection and related fields.
